Book Fair Is Coming!

The Book Fair has returned to Pickett's Mill Elementary!

It will be open everyday next week (February 27 - March 2).

The hours are:

 Mon - Thurs  7-4 

Fri is 7-3

There will be a special early shopping night this Friday from 5:15-6:00 so come shop before playing Bingo! You can send money to school with your child in an envelope clearly marked "Book Fair" and I can give them time to shop during the school day. You can even order online at

Book Fair News

The Book Fair is here and we have a win-win opportunity for you!!! Come visit the Scholastic Book Fair at the Pickett's Mill Media Center and have lunch with your second grade student too. The date for Castle 2nd Grade Guests is Wednesday, February29th from 10:54-11:24. If you are planning on attending, please fill out the RSVP slip included your child's PTA Folder and send it in with your child on or before February 14th.

February 7th

WOW- Is it really February? This crazy spring-like weather has me all befuddled! It also has me rather ill- I am sorry for posting this so late this week, but I am home with strep throat. The doctor has cleared me to return to work tomorrow,though, so we can get back to business as usual in The Castle. We had a very busy week last week and we are getting back into our normal routine following Leadership Day. In math we finished our unit on fractions- the kids did great on this unit. In writing we finished making our interview books, and we can't wait for you to see them in the spring when we have our authors breakfast. I am so proud of how far your children have come with their writing. In social studies we had fun learning about Jackie Robinson and why he is considered a famous American Hero.

Looking forward to this coming week...We will not have spelling this week and the homework packet will look very different. We are beginning another non-fiction writing piece - an animal research project. Your child has already chosen their animal and their homework each night will be to do some research on their animal. I have included specific directions for the research in the packet, as well as recording sheets that are to be completed each night and turned in the following day. Monday night is the animals appearance, Tuesday night the habitat and Wednesday night is fun and interesting facts. Some of the Lords and Ladies want to go above and beyond by bringing in cool projects like dioramas and posters about their animal as well. This is not required, but is fine with me as long as it applies to the animal they selected and teaches us something important that they learned. I can feel some 3+ grades in writing and research coming on this nine weeks!!

 I am also sending home a letter about making a Valentine box at home. Since there won't be any homework except to do research, students can spend the rest of the week working on their Valentine boxes.

• · Reading - Orally Fluency- we will revisit some past readers teaters this week
• · Writing - Animal Research Project- we will be working on writing non-fiction pieces that are unique and interesting enough to hold our readers' intrest.

License Plates for Cobb Schools

 

Order Your Official "Support Cobb Schools" License Plate Today!  Your School Will Receive $10 For Each Plate Sold!

 

The Cobb Schools Foundation is excited to announce that we have received approval from the Georgia Department of Revenue and the Department of Motor Vehicles to offer an official "Support Cobb Schools" license plate!  We need to sell at least 1,000 license plates before the plate can be manufactured.  The Foundation will donate $10 for each plate sold by February 3 to Pickett's Mill Elementary!  To order your plate, simply print out the attached application, write the name of your school on the top, fill out the form, attach payment and send to the Foundation office.  Applications must be postmarked no later than February 3 for Pickett's Mill Elementary to receive credit.

After this initial period, all applications will go through the Department of Motor Vehicles and we will not be able to track them.  You will receive a copy of your application marked "paid" to be used as your receipt.  You will be notified as soon as the plates are available for pick up at your local DMV.  Simply take your receipt into your local DMV and pick up your new plate! There may be an additional nominal specialty plate fee at time of pick up, however, you will not pay any Ad Valorem taxes.  You will simply renew your tags in the month you always have. Each year you renew your plate, $10 will be donated to the Foundation to help provide grants for teachers, scholarships for graduating seniors, ASP scholarships for kids in-need and so many other programs support by the Foundation.

 

Please help us get the word out!  Print out the attached application and license plate design poster, write the name of your school on the top, copy front to back and send out with your students!  Pass this on to your friends and family! You don't have to live in Cobb County to have a "Support Cobb Schools" license plate.  Anyone can order this plate!  Our goal is to sell at least 1,000 before February 3, so that we can get approval from the Georgia Legislature to receive $10 for each plate sold. 

 

Help us be the first school district in Georgia to have our very own license plate and "Support Cobb Schools!"  Show your Cobb County Pride!  Grab a pen and send it in!
