Week of March 28th

 

We have a fun and exciting week coming up!  Please don't forget to send in your child's costume this Monday morning.  We need to make sure your child can perform in their costume.  The children are very excited and are looking forward to you seeing their production.

  

As you know, your child has no homework this week.  While they have no formal assignment, I ask that you PLEASE read with your child, work on counting and writing numbers to 30, as well as practicing sight words.  Thanks for your help!

Reading: This week we will be working with poems and Mother Goose rhymes.  Students will be reading the words of the poems as well as reciting them.  We will use these rhymes to work on our rhyming skills, phonic sounds, sight words, and word families.    

        

 Math:  We are working on number combinations and counting objects to 30.  Students need to count object and write their numbers to 30 correctly.

 Phonics:  We will continue working on short vowel sounds a, e, and i.  When you read with your child they can point out the words that have the short vowel sounds in the words they read. 

 Sight Words:  Students are practicing their sight words EVERYDAY.  We are learning how to recognize all 40 words.  Please continue practicing your child's sight words with them daily.

Science: We are continuing our study of living and nonliving things.  Students are learning the difference between living and nonliving things.  We will go on a hunt to find different living and non-living things.  

 



  

Writing:  We are writing about personal experiences and spring events.  Students continue to work on writing complete sentences that make sense.  We are encouraging the children to read their work, sound out words they don't know, and use capital letters as well as punctuation.

Relay for Life - Eggstravaganza

 

Our second annual EGGSTRAVAGANZA is coming up March 30, 31, and April 1. Please consider supporting our Relay for Life Team and our fight against cancer! Week of March 21st

We are working very hard in all subject areas. We have been practicing our sight words.  Some of us are struggling with these words. PLEASE continue to practice your child's sight words daily. Students need to read all these words by May.  Thank you for all your support.  Below are some of the things we will be doing this week. 

Reading:  We will be looking at poems this week. " Mud Monster",  "Sand", "Our Washing Machine", "In The Tub", and "Seeds" are some of the poems we will work with.  We will be visualizing, making mental pictures, and using words to descirbe feelings and sounds.  We will also be reading spring themed books like Raindrops. We will read Little Red Ridinghood and working on comprehension  As we read we will try to make text-to-self connections.

 Math: Students will be using different manipulatives to build number combinations to 10.  This will help us as we begin addition strategies.

Phonics:  We will be working on short vowel sounds with a concentration on a, e, and i.  Look for short vowel words as you read with your child.

Sight Words:  where, your

Science:  Living and nonliving things.  Students will be learning the difference between living and nonliving things.  We will classifiy and categorize different photos and objects to understand this conceopt better.  

Writing:  Students will continue to write about personal experiences.  We will be working on using correct writing conventions and telling a story with our words.  Our focus will be on creating a setting or picture through our words.

Our "Mother Goose Party Musical" is approaching fast.  We are practicing very hard to make this a special event.  If you should have any questions please let me know.  On Monday, March 28th, we will be practicing in our costumes.  PLEASE have your child's costume ready by then and send it in with your child that morning.  I can't wait for you to see the children perform.

Our School Store is having a half-price sale on Wednesday, March 23rd!  The store will be open from 7:15 - 7:45.

Relay for Life will be hosing the Eggstravaganza March 30th - April 1st. 

Thank You, to those of you who sent in items for our treasure book.  We are still in need of more fun things for the children to choose from.  Thanks for your donation.

Week of March 14th!

    We had a great week of learning and fun!  We love our parents and are very grateful for all the support and help you give us. We have another week packed full of new ideas to explore and things to learn.  We will be finishing up assessments for report cards.  Children should be able to tell me their address, city, county, state, country, and continent.  Keep practicing with your child. Read below for a sneak preview of some of the things we will work on this week. 

Reading: We will be using the book Happy Hat to discover different ways to problems solve as we read.  We will answer questions we may have about unfamiliar words and what to do to make sure we comprehend as we are reading. Retelling is very important.  Students will work on strategies to retell stories they have read.   We will also be reading Saint Patrick's Day books.  

            

Math: We will be working with Shapes. We will be combining basic shapes to make more complex and different shapes.  Students will also compose and decompose shapes of ther own.

Phonics: Our Letter Of The Week: Nn.  We will be working with the word families  -in and -un.  The children will be working on blending sounds to make different words within these families.  

Sight Words Of The Week: up by. We will detect these words in our surroundings and everyday reading.  They pop up everywhere!

Social Studies:  We will finish up our study on our National Symbols. 

Writing: The children will be writing about personal experiences, responding to literature, and creating new stories.  They continue to work on using their writing resources and correct writing conventions.

MOTHER GOOSE    

We sent home a note about our "Mother Goose Party Musical".  We will be performing the muscial on Friday, April 1st.  In the letter you should have received information about your child's costume.  If you have any questions let us know.  The children are having fun learning the songs and the movements.  We are looking forward to a fun performance.

We need some items for our treasure box.  If you have any extra items we can add, please send them in with your child.  Thanks for your help!

Classroom News for March 7th!

    We had a wonderful week with lots of learning!   The children enjoyed learning from book illustrator Michael P. White ( http://www.michaelpwhite.com/).  They enjoyed a hands on drawing lesson learning some new ways to draw fun, life filled characters.  It was great!

    We have lots to do this week.  Here are some highlights for our week:

Language Arts Skills:  We are continuing to work on our note taking skills and using various strategies to remember what we read.

Books: Fire Engines, by Anne Rockwell      

            

Alice The Fairy, by David Shannon            

 

Phonics Focus:  Qq/ sound and letter focus.  We are also working with vowels and the sounds they make.

Sight Words:  from  make.  Don't forget to practice these words to help your child recognize them easily.  See if your child can find these words as they are reading or even on menus and signs while you are out.

Handwriting: Q q

Writer's Workshop:  Students will be writing about their life experiences and their reactions to their favorite books.  As they write students are encouraged to sound out their words, use correct capitalizaiton, punctuation, and to make they understand what they have written.    

Math: Students will be making fair trades between pennies, nickels, and dimes.  We will also be working on capacity and measurement. 

Science:  We are finishing up our study of promoting health and preventing the spread of germs.  Ask your child about Germs Are Not For Sharing. 

Social Studies:  National Symbols are very important.  We have had a fun time looking at the many symbols of our nation.
