Week of February 27th, 2012

I hope that each of you were able to enjoy some of this gorgeous weather that we have had this week.  I know that the kids and teachers here at Pickett's Mill sure have!   It's making Spring Fever hit a little early.  Spring Break is just FIVE (Mystery Word) weeks away after all...  With that said, that doesn't mean that things are slacking in the classroom.  We are charging full steam ahead gearing up for third grade. 

The teachers found out this week that we will be administering the CRCT to all second graders this year here at Pickett's Mill.  I will share more information as I get it.  Testing will begin on April 18th.  Our second graders will only take the Reading and Math sections.  As for now, that is all the information that I have to share.

This week we will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday by wearing pajamas to school and some other special surprises.  Reading the separate post on the blog for more information about this day.

Andrew won honorable mention and Keira won third place for second grade in the Pickett's Mill Science Fair Competition.

Book Fair is Next Week!!!!!

The Book Fair has returned to Pickett's Mill Elementary!

It will be open everyday next week (February 27 - March 2).

The hours are:

 Mon - Thurs  7-4 

Fri is 7-3

There will be a special early shopping night this Friday from 5:15-6:00 so come shop before playing Bingo! You can send money to school with your child in an envelope clearly marked "Book Fair" and I can give them time to shop during the school day. You can even order online at

Pajama Day

On Friday, March 2nd, your child can wear their PJs to celebrate "Read Across America".  We will be doing activities to celebrate reading throughout the day.  We also have a guest author coming to the school (courtesy of our wonderful PTA), Chris Rumble, to have a Reading Pep Rally with each grade level.  Fun times ahead!!!!  Get your pajamas ready.......

Week of February 20th

What fun we had this week with Jump Rope for Heart here at Pickett's Mill Elementary!  We raised over $10,500 to be donated to the American Heart Association.  WAY TO GO, PIRATES!  Miss Bagwell and some of her Atlanta Falcons cheerleader friends as well as many of the athletes from Alatoona High School came to help us in the celebration.  Great fun was had by all!

Exchanging Valentine's on Wednesday was a lot of fun.  The kids enjoyed getting notes from each other as well as Miss Bagwell and myself.  Thank you for our treats as well.  A BIG THANKS to our fabulous room mom, Mrs. Hintze for bringing in a special snack for us that afternoon.  We also enjoyed our popcorn and soda celebration on Friday after winning the prize for bringing in the most money in 2nd grade for the Relay for Life challenge last week.  A BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Kellenbenz who brought in a special treat for those in orthodontics work that can't have popcorn. 

Don't forget that we get a three day weekend due to President's Day on Monday.  Take some time to Sharpen Your Saw and enjoy some extra family time.  Mystery Word:  three.  I am sent home next week's spelling list as well as our homework packet on Friday so that they have it over the weekend if they want to plan ahead since it will be a shortened week.  Enjoy!

WE WON!  Congratulations to THE PIRATE PAD for having the highest percentage of participation in the Relay for Life 110 cent challenge.  We will be rewarded with a popcorn and soda celebration on Friday of this week.  Also, a big thank you to Mrs. Kellenbenz who will be providing an extra snack for those in braces who cannot have popcorn right now.  WAY TO GO, MATEYS!

Advanced Voting for the Primary Begins This Week

Voters are encouraged to take advantage of advance voting for the Presidential Preference Primary/Special Election. The actual Election Day is Tuesday, March 6, however advance voting is available 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, from Feb. 13 to March 2. Voting will also be available 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25. No reason is required and people may vote in person at Election's main office, in the West Park Government Center at 736 Whitlock Ave., Marietta. Arbor Day

Celebrate Arbor Day with vegetable and tree seedling giveaway

Keep Cobb Beautiful staff and board of directors will host an event Saturday, Feb. 18, in celebration of Georgia's Arbor Day. From 9 a.m. to noon, residents are encouraged to visit one of four county parks to receive vegetable garden seeds and maple and sawtooth oak tree seedlings. The giveaways will happen at: Lost Mountain Park (4845 Dallas Highway, Powder Springs), East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road, Marietta), South Cobb Recreation Center (875 Six Flags Drive, Austell) and Harrison Park (2653 Shallowford Road, Marietta).

Georgia's Arbor Day is a time to reflect on the importance of trees in our state. While National Arbor Day is the third Friday in April, it is too warm then to plant trees in Georgia. Every tree planted helps clean the air and water, beautify neighborhoods, provides homes for wildlife, conserves energy and prevents soil erosion. KCB staff will also host a tree planting event 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Yearbook Deadline Extended

Yearbook orders have a March 16th deadline.  They will not be ordering but a few additional books so get them while you can!
