This week has been busy. I started assessing reading. We have been doing guided reading groups, producing rhyming words, reading sight words, and learning about story elements. In math, the class had worked on different ways to write numbers, greater than and less than, teen number and ten games. This week we concentrated on science and sorting rocks. We also went outside to collect rocks and make a pet rock. We are ending the 3^rd nine weeks and will be assessing in the next few weeks. Make sure your child knows address, city, county, country and continents. Your child also needs to know at least 50 sight words.

1. Friday March 1 – Dr. Seuss' birthday – Pajama Day –We will be doing some special activities next week to celebrate Read Across America. Have your child wear their pj's to school and bring any Dr. Seuss books they have. We will have a guest author -Annette Laing. You can pre-purchase her book. Information is in the folders today.

Cans of Kindness

Valentine's Food Drive

 

In celebration of Valentine's Day, the Pickett's Mill Student Council is sponsoring a "Cans of Kindness" food drive to support the Northwest Christian Church Food Pantry. The Northwest Christian Church Food Pantry supports families in our Acworth community. This food pantry serves around 250 – 300 families in our area each month. The canned food drive will "hip hop" into action at the 80"s Dance on Friday, Feb. 8^th. You can drop off canned foods at the Student Council collection barrel that night. We will also be collecting food on Monday, Feb. 11^th through Thursday, Feb. 14th. The following is a list of suggested items, but any food donation would be appreciated.

 

 

• Canned pastas (spaghetti o's, ravioli, etc.)
• Canned meat, tuna or ham
• Canned or boxed instant potatoes
• Canned peas, sweet corn
• Canned tomatoes
• Kidney and baked beans
• Dried beans

What a busy week! We have been practicing our song we are performing on Leadership Day. We have been doing a lot of guided reading, writing sentences and using adjectives to extend our sentences. The class did a story map of Pete the Cat to help retell the story. We are having a Code Red practice this week so we spent time talking about what happens. We spent a good portion of the day Wednesday in duck and cover. The children did a great job staying quiet in the halls. The children just thought it was another drill. In math we are working on addition. We are really excited about Leadership Day. There will be over 100 guest in the school and they will be doing classroom visits as well as seeing children give speeches and performing through dance, music, gymnastics, academics, and other various talents. The whole day is run by the students in the school. Every child has a part in this day.

This has been a busy week with MLK Day, Science and Empowerment Notebook Night and the 100^th Day of School. We have also been preparing for Leadership Day. We made a mini book of our city, county, state, country, and continent. The class made leadership role filmstrips to decorate the hall and worked on a Sharpen the Saw quilt. The students did guided reading books with story elements and some worked on word families. We worked on writing sentences and stories using capital letters, punctuation, and spacing. We finished writing academic and personal goals. The class worked with a number line and solved addition and subtraction problems. They worked on putting numbers to 20 in order and counting on from a given number. We enjoyed traveling around kindergarten in the dark doing 100^th day activities. They wrote about what they would do if they had $100, made themselves to look 100 years old, played a 100 chart game, made badges and 100 day hats.

Information:

1. DRESS FOR SUCCESS – On Friday February 1^st –Leadership Day- The children are to dress in their nicest clothes. Girls should wear nice dresses and the boys should wear dress pants and nice shirts.
2. February 1 – Leadership Day – This is a day for the students to show their leadership skills to special visitors. No parents are allowed to be a part of this due to the large number of visitors we will have.
3. February 8 - 80's Dance – 6:30

It is so nice to see the sun out today instead of rain. The students have been antsy because we have been unable to get outside and run off some energy. This week we have been back to our normal routine. The class worked on guided reading and talked about beginning, middle and end. We also talked about characters and setting. We designed snowmen, drew, painted and labeled the snowmen. The children wrote home and personal goals. We talked about and made a mini book on Martin Luther King JR. The class has written several stories this week and used a writing rubric to grade their writings. In math, the class has been working on addition and subtraction word problems, addition and subtraction on a number line, numbers that come before or after a given number, and a game sorting number words and color words. In science/health the class has been learning about germs.

Information:

1. Six Flags Reading Forms were sent home Tuesday – these forms are due back February 19. We cannot take late forms.
2. Scholastic book orders are due January 25.

I hope everyone had a nice holiday and spent a lot of time sharpening the saw. We have been getting back into routine this week and the children have been really tired. We have kept in routine most of the week. We did have Wellstar come and do a lesson on germs. The children learned the correct way to wash their hands and not spread germs. In groups this week the class has read the story The Mitten and talked about characters and setting and they did a sequencing activity with the animals. We worked on predictable charts and the parts of a sentence. The children over the next nine weeks will be working on writing opinion pieces with capitalization at the beginning of the sentence and punctuation at the end of the sentence as well as capitalizing the letter I. In math the class worked on counting on using a 100 chart, addition and subtraction word problems, counting in circular arrays and writing numerals 0-20. In social studies we are working on National Monuments and learning our city, county, country, state and continent. The children know the general geography names in order and now we are working on mixing them up. They also need to learn their address during the nine weeks.

Science Night

 

Science Night is January 22 at 6:00 p.m. As we have discussed, this will also be an opportunity for students to share their empowerment/data notebooks with their parents and conduct a student-led conference. The evening will include hands-on science activities in the gym, an interactive show by Big Thinkers in the cafeteria and student-led conferences in your classroom. Your only responsibility for that night is to circulate in your classroom while students share their notebooks.

This has been a very busy week. We took a trip around the world. We visited England, Israel, Mexico, and Germany. The class took a ride on the Polar Express. We did Gingerbread man informational writing using a writing rubric. We are working on addition and subtraction word problems. I have been busily assessing all the students. Thank you for sending in all the extras for activities this month. The students will be taking home their snowmen shirts. Have them wear them to school next Tuesday for our class party.

Information:

1. We will have super specials next Tuesday. Please wear tennis shoes on this day.
2. No school next Friday –It is a furlough day
3. School begins January 8 for all students.
4. Guided reading books are being taken up and will begin again in January.
5. Wear Snowman shirts on Tuesday

We have been busy this week working on assessing students for the county benchmarks, GKIDS (state assessments) and working on assessing for the report cards. The children have had guided reading groups, made mini books of Christmas objects, worked on character and setting and retelling of stories. We enjoyed the fifth grade Christmas musical. In math, we worked on numbers in the teens, addition and subtraction word problems, positional words and greater than and equal to. In social studies we have been reviewing bald eagle and the Statue of Liberty. The last few weeks will be really busy with all the assessments and we may not respond immediately to emails or notes unless it is an emergency. We may not always get to the sight words each day because of the assessments. I will try to get to the children who send in a note ready to be tested for the words.

Information:

1. Please send in your t-shirt Monday if you haven't already sent one.
2. Each child had a cooking item to send in for our travel around the world. Please send it in by Monday also.
3. We will have Super Specials on Tuesday December 18^th. Please have your child wear tennis shoes that day because we will be going to PE on that day.
4. Winter Holidays start December 21^st. We do not have school on the Friday.
5. Don't forget to send in your 20 items for the students goodie bags.
6. Don't forget to send in your wrapped coloring book and crayon.
