Free Parenting Workshops

The Guiding Good Choices parenting program is a 3-week class for parents and caregivers of elementary and middle school children.  Workshops cover:

• Developing clear family guidelines and expectations for behavior
• Teaching children the skills they need to stay out of trouble while still having fun
• Learning about the nature and extent of teenage drug use and how to prevent this within your own family
• Managing family conflict in a way that maintains and strengthens  bonds
• Increasing children’s involvement with the family in the teen years
• Creating a parent support network

 

Classes will be January 17th, 24th, 31st

Stacey DeWitt's "Parenting from the Inside Out"

Test scores. Trophies. To do lists. Has today’s competitive and complex world driven by external rewards and outcomes replaced parenting – and living -- with principle? Stacey DeWitt shares the latest research on teen stress, depression and anxiety, along with thought-provoking strategies to help reposition today’s race for a reward with an internal focus -- on who, rather than what, we want to become. Learn ways to live from the inside out, rather than letting challenges turn us inside out.

John Rosemond's "Love and Leadership" -

Children depend on parents for the two L-words of Love and Leadership.  In today's parenting culture, Love is often weakened by well-intentioned enabling and Leadership is weakened by the equally well-intentioned attempt to be "popular" with one's children in this entertaining and though-provoking talk.  John tells parents how to deliver these two essential parenting ingredients in ways that strengthen children emotionally and help them grow into responsible, compassionate citizens.  This talk is appropriate for parents with all ages of kids as John talks about a "point of view" on parenting rather than targeting a particular age group.

i-Communication:
Understanding The Role of Technology in Your Child’s World

Presented by Brian A. Conner, LPC at Ridgeview Institute

This workshop addresses how adolescents are utilizing various aspects of technology in the realms of social networking websites, text and “sext” messaging, emailing, smartphone apps and more.  The bulk of the workshop is designed to address how parents can not only become more aware of what adolescents are doing but how they can use technology to monitor, limit and even restrict their child’s access to the internet and text messaging.  Several resources are provided including the names and prices of software that can be used on your and your child’s computer to monitor their online safety as well as text messaging/data plans from the four largest cellular carriers in the U.S. (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile). 

 

 

Brian A. Conner, M.Ed, LPC is the Educational Coordinator of the Youth Services Program at Ridgeview Institute. He has been with Ridgeview since 2006 and has been a Licensed Professional Counselor for over 11 years.  Brian is also a certified Professional School Counselor in the state of Georgia.  He has worked in residential, psychiatric and school settings in the Atlanta area since 1994.  Brian has a background as a special education teacher as well as special education programs and policies in Georgia.
