 We are ALL Leaders!

1 27 Matter 100 day leadership day 004

What a WONDERFUL week!  We had many fun learning experiences this week.  Friday capped our week off with a great Leadership Day.  We showed visitors how we use the Seven Habits daily.  Thank you parents for ALL you did to help us prepare.  The children were precious in the dress for success best.  They enjoyed our fun 100 holiday snack and finished up with a matter experiment.  Read below to see some of the other things we did this week!

Writing:     Students wrote using transition words: First, Next, Then, and Last.  We sequenced stories that we read and then wrote about them in the order they happened.  Students wrote and illustrated their own stories by  using transition words.  We continue to practice sounding out EVERY letter we hear when we write, using spaces between our words, and reading our own writing to make sure it says what we want (makes sense).

Letter of the Week: I i.  We discussed how I is a vowel and makes the short sound and long sound.

Phonics:  We found words that begin with the b and m sounds.  Students located many items in our classroom with these sounds.

Reading:  We read many fun books this week.  We identified the character, setting, feelings, and details in the story.  Please have your child retell the stories they read with you.  It is important that you child can retell and give details about the stories they read.

Snowy Day : 50th Anniversary Edition,9780670012701          We had  a author study of Helen Lester's Tacky books.  Students made a paper Tacky of their own and then we turned our opinions into a graph to see which book we liked the best.  We know what book we liked the best and which books we liked the best.  We even earned a great new song. Ask your child to sing it to you. SO MUCH FUN!!!

Science:   MATTER.  We know that everything is made up of matter.  Students took their information further and realized that matter can be a solid, liquid, or gas.  We had a fun time identifying how vapor can turn to water droplets and how liquid (water) can become a solid (ice) and back to a liquid then vapor.  We finished up with some icky ublick.

Math: We did many activites with counting one-to-one correspondence to 20 and identifying, counting, and fair trading with coins.  For our 100th Day Celebration we had 100 item snack count.  YUMMY!!  Thanks for sending in all the goodies for us to enjoy!

Classroom News for January 23rd

I hope you had a great weekend!  We had a very busy week and worked on many skills.  Keep reading at home and sounding out words as you are reading and writing with your child.  Please don't forget this Friday is Leadership Day!  Have your child wear their dress for success best.  It's going to be a GREAT week!  Read below to see some of the things we have been up to.

Writing:  We are working very hard on using ALL our writing conventions!  Students used a graphic organizer to write about their weekend.  They wrote details in the organizer and then used the organizer to write complete sentences.  We also worked on using transition words: first, next, and last in our writing.  We made cinnamon toast to start us off in the right direction.

Phonics:  We worked with the letters Xx, Yy, and Zz.  Students found words that begin with these letters and sorted them in the correct spot.

Letter of the Week:  Students practiced writing the uppercase G and lowercase g.  They worked on the 2 sounds that G makes.

Social Studies:  We studied Martin Luther King, Jr.  Students learned that Dr. King had a dream for peace and equality for all people.  Your child will know that we celebrate this National holiday because of the work Dr. King did to help all people to be treated fairly and equally.

Dates to Remember

Wednesday 1-25      Treasure Chest (School Store) open 7:05-7:45

Friday 1-27                Leadership Day!  Dress for success.

 Wiggles Snowman

What a great week we had!  It was wonderful to see everyone after the holiday.  We were very busy with new activies and fun learning experiences.  Your child's second report card was sent home on Friday.  Please sign and return the card on Monday.  Remember, the criteria  for the standards changes or increases each nine weeks.  If your child has a 3 now, they need to continue to work hard to maintain that 3 next time.  If you child has a 2 now, they might need extra help and practice to earn a 3 next time.  To help your child in reading and writing you can: review sight words, read at home daily, and practice writing stories several days a week.

Writing:  No Excuses! (Hardcover)  We read a book about making goals.  We then talked about setting goals and what we needed to do to reach our goals.  The children also wrote about what they did during the holiday.  We continue to practice writing complete sentences, using captial letters, and punctuation correctly.  On Friday, your child made a paper snowman, gave him a name, and wrote what he likes to do.  Keep practicing writing at home.  Your help is important to your child success.

Letter of the Week:  Ff.  We had fun searching for things that begin with the letter "f".

Phonics:  ___op, ___ ot and ____og.  We worked with these word families this week.  Students came up with words that have these endings and used the words to write a complete sentences.

Reading:   Strega Nona: Her Story [Book]  It's hard to be five: learning how to work my control panel [Book]  The First Day of Winter [Book]  We read many books this week.  We are talking about folktales, fiction, and nonfiction book.  Students need to retell the stories we read.  They should know the characters, setting, and sequence of events in our stories.  We are working hard sounding out the words we read and using clues to comprehend the stories we read.

Social Studies: We began our study of Martin Luther King.  Learning about Dr. King is one of our standards.  You can reinforce this standard by talking about his desire for peace and equality for all people.  Your child learned a song with hand motions about Dr. King.  See if they can share it with you.  It's really cute and has facts about Dr. King.

Math: We have been practicing counting and writing numbers and sets to 20.  We worked in our math journals with these numbers.  If your child has the opportunity to write these numbers at home, make sure they are writing them correctly.  You can even make flash cards and have your child identify the numbers, put them in order, and count out object that match that number (macaroni and beans are lots of fun to count).

Classroom News for December 12th

We began our study of Christmas celebrations around the world!  The children had a great time visiting SWEDEN and GERMANY.  They made a Christmas craft from that country, ate a snack representing something children in that country might enjoy, and learned facts about the country.   A HUGE THANK YOU to EVERYONE who sent in food donations to help us make St. Lucias buns in our study of Sweden.  The children had a super time making their own Swedish treat.

Writing: We have been reviewing all the conventions of writing.  Please help your child write at home!  I am reminding the children to use captial letters at the beginning of their writing not all the way through their writings.  Many children are not writing complete sentences and/or their sentences don't make sense.  (they forget to write all the words in their sentence).  When you are writing, remind them to read what they have written.  The children made a wish list for you.  I hope you got it! We also worked on writing about the countries we visited.  What a busy week!!

Phonics: Students sorted the letters Uu, Vv, and Ww.  We looked for words that began with these letters and reviewed the sounds these letters make.  We also worked on writing these letters correctly.

Letter of the Week: Cc.  We found many words that begin with the /c/ sound.  Students also learned that "c" can make two sounds: hard c and soft c.  The /c/ in centipede is a soft "c" sound. The /c/ sound in caterpillar is a hard "c" sound.  Please help your child identify these different sounds.

Reading:  We read many books this week.  Your child enjoy having a gingerbread cookie of their own.  They made a glyph during reading groups, sequenced the story, and talked about characters and setting.

Social Studies: We began our study of Christmas celebrations all over the world.  We look at how these celebrations are similiar and how they are different.

  Sweden

We also completed our study of the Statue of Liberty and the Bald Eagle.  Each child knows that these are two of our National Symbols and what each symbol means.

Math:  We worked on numbers to 20  and 2D shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle).  Students also made a snow globe out of shapes.  The children had a great time cutting out patterns and making a picture with them.  We also worked on patterns.  Your children brought home a chain to count down the days to Christmas. OH NO!  Not to many days left.
